Thinking about starting your own flock? Start with pure-bred Light Brahmas. This breed used to be the meat breed in America until the 1930s.They are the 2nd largest breed of chicken. The hens lay 3-4 brown eggs weekly and can produce for 8 years or so. Their chicks can be used as a hearty meat breed for your family as well. Light Brahmas are docile (even the roosters), suited for free-ranging (beware, they are pigs if you don't free range lol), and very cold-weather durable. This is the perfect breed for anyone just starting out or a seasoned homesteader.
