I remember when I was young, our black/Sable collie stopped us from walking down the road. We didn't understand why he was acting weird. All of a sudden, a snake slithered across the road. Since we had kids of our own, we decided collies were the breed for us.  If you own a farm, collies are notorious for herding. If you have many acres and need herding of livestock, these are perfect for your needs. Collies aren't necessarily livestock guardians; however, collies will patrol your property possibly being a deterrent towards predators. They are great towards our cats and livestock. Cookies N Cream even acted as a mom towards a bottle-fed lamb one year.
